Despite the lack of progression since its initial announcement, filmmaker Patty Jenkins has confirmed that her envisioned Star Wars movie centered on X-wing pilots, called Rogue Squadron, is still in the works.
During her appearance on the Talking Pictures podcast from TCM, Jenkins shared with host Ben Mankiewicz that the script for Rogue Squadron is still under development. This project was previously thought to be scrapped, much like several other planned Star Wars movies that were announced but never filmed in recent years.
Jenkins had originally stepped away from Rogue Squadron to focus her attention on creating the third installment of the Wonder Woman series. However, the development of Wonder Woman 3 unfortunately fell through.
“I departed from Star Wars to pursue Wonder Woman 3, and when I commenced work on it, we mulled over the possibility of my return to Star Wars post-Wonder Woman 3. Consequently, we initiated discussions to make that feasible,” Jenkins clarified.
“Subsequently, when Wonder Woman 3 was off the table, Lucasfilm and I acknowledged that it was crucial to finalize our agreement. Just as the strike was about to kick off, we sealed the deal, which means I’ve now committed to producing a draft for Star Wars,” she added.
Jenkins had initially pitched the concept for the movie as a Top Gun-inspired adventure set within the Star Wars universe. Rogue Squadron was officially declared by Lucasfilm and Disney back in December 2020. The announcement brought with it enough confidence that they even released a promotional teaser for the anticipated movie.
Lucasfilm described Rogue Squadron as a movie that would “usher in a new era for starfighter pilots in the galaxy, challenging them to obtain their wings and risk everything in high-velocity, daring escapades.” However, despite the initial excitement, delays began to pile up and the originally slated 2023 premiere date is now up in the air.
