The cinematic landscape in 2023 has been shaken up by an underdog hit, the impressive Japanese prequel to the Godzilla saga, Godzilla Minus One, which has shattered expectations with a $50 million triumph at the U.S. box office alone. (To say it’s exceptional is an understatement; it’s earned a spot on my top movies of the year list.)

The charm of Godzilla Minus One lies not only in its role as a prelude to the iconic Godzilla tale but in its homage to Godzilla’s original depiction: a symbol of sheer terror and a metaphorical representation of the nuclear devastation from World War II. In Minus One, we witness the return of this formidable Godzilla, now embodying the persistent anguish of war survivors. The narrative focuses on a war-tattered veteran as he desperately tries to keep his makeshift family intact amidst the chaos of Godzilla’s emergence and subsequent rampage across Japan.

The first Godzilla film, released in 1954 and directed by Ishiro Honda, was screened in black-and-white, surely inspiring the announcement that a monochromatic version of Godzilla Minus One—wittily dubbed Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color—is slated for U.S. theater release after its debut in Japan.
