In the late 1930s, Martin Goodman ventured into the burgeoning world of comic books by establishing “Timely Publications.” The initial release under this moniker was a series titled Marvel Comics.

Eventually, the title “Marvel Comics” became the namesake for the company, turning it into an emblem of superhero culture around the planet. Although by the 1960s Marvel had risen to be a comic book juggernaut, translating its stories to the silver screen was a slow process. Nearly four decades had to pass for Marvel’s adaptations to truly encapsulate the vibrancy of the narrative universe found in its comics. Fast forward another two decades, and Marvel reigns supreme in Hollywood, delivering a slew of films annually and boasting the highest-grossing film of all time.

Spanning the time from the debut of Marvel Comics #1 to the creation of the colossal Marvel Cinematic Universe, over 70 theatrical features have been crafted from Marvel’s vast array of characters. This count excludes unreleased projects like 1994’s The Fantastic Four and various direct-to-video animated movies such as Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. The list that unfolds here is arranged from the less-than-stellar to the pinnacle of superhero delight. While the rankings reflect the writer’s personal inclinations (after all, he penned a book dedicated to Spider-Man), they are cemented by a lifetime devoted to studying this particularly nerdy domain.

From the early days of Captain America serials to the groundbreaking Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we’ve cataloged the expansive cinematic history of Marvel.
