Robert Downey Jr. Says A Marvel Comeback Isn’t Off the Table

It seems that Robert Downey Jr. hasn’t completely closed the door on a possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expressing a newfound openness to the idea.

In a recent discussion published by Variety with Jodie Foster, Downey was questioned about the possibility of donning the role of Tony Stark again, to which he responded…

I can’t seem to shake it off. It’s wired into me. No other character I’ve played has ever been so much like me, and yet so much cooler than I’ll ever be. I’m surprisingly open to the thought of coming back. With the projects Nyad, [Night Country], and then on my plate are Oppenheimer and Sympathizer, it’s just wild. We’ve been reviewing some recent pictures, double-checking: ‘Do we still look the part?’ And I think to myself, ‘Yeah, we still got it.’

Downey brought Tony Stark and Iron Man to life across ten films spanning 2008 to 2019, culminating in the character’s heroic demise in Avengers: Endgame as he saved the universe from Thanos.

The conclusion of Iron Man’s journey in Endgame marked what was intended to be Downey’s final appearance in the Marvel universe. However, the franchise has experienced a lull in the years that followed, as new characters and storylines haven’t resonated with audiences quite like the original ensemble did. Downey’s return would undeniably inject some much-needed vitality as well as bring back a fan-favorite figure, potentially re-energizing the Avengers saga.

I have my doubts about a standalone Iron Men 4 premiere featuring Downey. Nevertheless, as Marvel delves into its “Multiverse Saga” teeming with alternate renditions of iconic characters, an appearance by Downey as an iteration of Iron Man during a pivotal moment does seem within reach — and even more so when considering remarks like these from the actor himself. Looking at his openness and past successful cameos from actors like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it strikes me as a compelling move for Downey.
